At least 3,000 people killed in eastern Ukraine since mid-April — UN

At least 3,000 people have been killed in Ukraine’s eastern regions since mid-April this year. As Interfax-Ukraine reported, it was said by new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

«We remain concerned about the situation in Ukraine. The UNCHR’s latest monthly report gives a full picture of current human rights challenges, especially in the east, where at least 3,000 people have been killed since mid-April this year,» the Colombo Gazette newspaper reported on Monday, publishing his statement at the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

According to the commissioner, every effort must be made by both the Ukrainian government and the armed groups — as well as by neighboring states, including Russia — to protect civilians in this deplorable conflict, and to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law.

Jordan’s Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein was appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the summer of 2014.
